DP World launched its deep-water port project in the Democratic Republic of Congo in partnership with construction firm Mota-Engil to lead the development of Banana Port, reinforcing the DRC’s position as a key trade hub.
This collaboration signifies a significant milestone in the advancement of the Banana Port project, which is poised to revolutionize the nation’s trade landscape by offering advanced infrastructure, lowering costs for businesses, and promoting the DRC’s economic autonomy.
Situated in Kongo Central province along the Atlantic coastline, the Banana Port signifies a substantial investment in the DRC’s infrastructure. As the DRC’s sole maritime gateway for containerized cargo, it will optimize trade operations, consolidate all administrative and customs functions, and improve the government’s oversight and control over international trade activities.
Developing in phases
The Banana Port will be constructed in phases. The initial phase is designed to accommodate the world’s largest vessels. It will feature a 600-meter quay, a handling capacity of 450,000 TEUs per year, and a 30-hectare storage area. Moreover, the subsequent phase will extend the quay wall by over 2 kilometers. This port is a DP World investment, with contributions from British International Investment (BII), the UK’s development finance institution and impact investor, Dubai Media Office reported.
Creating job opportunities
The construction of the port will engage multiple companies, including local businesses, and create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, offering new prospects for Congolese workers and enterprises. Additionally, it will be the nation’s first fully-equipped maritime gateway. It will reduce transport expenses and enhance trade efficiency. The port will also support local industries, ranging from agriculture to manufacturing.
