The UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE), in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), recently organized a workshop in Dubai. A significant outcome from this event was the announcement that the UAE will serve as the host for the inaugural Regional Centre of Excellence for Transforming Food Systems. This development is crucial for fostering innovation and strategic reform in food systems throughout the region.

Strengthening collaboration on food security

The workshop aimed to strengthen collaboration between the FAO and the UAE, particularly in furthering the nation’s efforts toward sustainable food security. It addressed various challenges in this domain, aligning with the strategic goals of the FAO Subregional Office for Gulf Cooperation Council States and Yemen.

Engaging stakeholders

Participants included officials from FAO, MOCCAE, local authorities, academic institutions, and private sector representatives specializing in food and agriculture. The discussions focused on clarifying the expectations between the Ministry and FAO concerning the framework and mission of the FAO Subregional Office, fostering a shared understanding of priorities and aspirations. They explored the mechanisms and resources necessary for successful collaboration, identifying key partnership areas.

Commitment to food security initiatives

Dr. Mohammed Salman Al Hamadi, assistant undersecretary for Food Diversity at MOCCAE, emphasized that the enhancement of the country’s food security hinges on the development of a robust food and agricultural sector, supported by modern, climate-smart technologies. He further pointed out that the launch of the UAE’s national initiative “Plant the Emirates” and the “National Agricultural Centre” are important steps that unite all stakeholders in tackling agricultural challenges in the UAE. These initiatives aim to provide comprehensive support to local farmers and leverage smart technologies to boost local agricultural production while enhancing its quality and competitiveness, he noted.

Role of FAO in national initiatives

Dr. Al Hamadi affirmed that the FAO will play a crucial role in supporting the national initiative, expressing confidence in the ongoing collaboration with the organization and a shared commitment to advancing the agricultural sector with all relevant stakeholders. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of identifying challenges, devising practical solutions, and implementing them effectively.

Strategic partnership goals

Also, Kayan Akram Jaff, head of Mission at the FAO Subregional Office for the Gulf Cooperation Council States and Yemen, indicated the FAO’s commitment to assisting the United Arab Emirates in addressing food security challenges. Moreover, he mentioned that their partnership would focus on strategic initiatives that align with their shared objectives and the UAE’s priorities.

Roadmap for future collaboration

Both MOCCAE and FAO reaffirmed their dedication to creating a clear roadmap for collaboration in food security and agricultural practices, as highlighted in their discussions. This strategic partnership aims to bolster food security in the region while advancing the mission of the FAO Subregional Office.
