Japan Airlines said on Thursday that its systems returned to normal and same-day ticket sales resumed following a cyberattack that delayed some domestic and international flights. The attack began at 7:24 AM, affecting internal and external systems, prompting the airline to temporarily shut down a router that was causing malfunctions and suspend ticket sales for flights departing on Thursday.

In a statement on social media platform X, Japan Airlines said that it identified and addressed the cause of the issue.

“We have identified the cause and scope of the malfunction, and the system has been restored. The issue was due to a large data attack and did not result in any customer data leaks or virus infections,” it added.

Japan Airlines noted that the “Airport Standby Service” for domestic flights departing today is suspended. Although the cyberattack did not cause major disruptions, Japan Airlines said earlier that 24 domestic flights had been delayed by more than half an hour. Problems with the carrier’s baggage check-in system also caused delays at several Japanese airports.

Following the cyberattack, Japan Airlines’ shares dipped 2.5 percent before recovering. The airline’s shares are now trading 0.24 percent lower at JPY2,466.

All Nippon Airways, Japan’s other major air carrier, said that it had not been affected by any cyber incidents and that services were operating as normal.

This week, American Airlines grounded all flights due to a brief outage during one of the busiest travel periods of the year. A technical glitch involving network hardware disrupted travel for thousands on Christmas Eve.
