UAE retail conglomerate Majid Al Futtaim (MAF) has achieved the highest level of certification possible in the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating system with its Mall of the Emirates. The LEED Platinum certification is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability achievement for the built environment and is the most widely used green building rating system in the world. Mall of the Emirates received the certification for 2022 under the LEED Operation and Maintenance category, through its partnership with Enova, a joint venture between MAF and Veolia, the regional leader in integrated energy and multi-technical services. This makes Mall of the Emirates the world’s largest operational mall to receive this international certification.

Mall of Emirates

This follows the Mall of Oman’s achievement of becoming the world’s largest mall to receive the LEED Platinum Certification for Building Design and Construction under New Building Core and Shell in 2021. The certification process evaluated the Mall of the Emirates’ environmental performance across five categories, namely energy, water, waste, transportation, and human experience. MAF’s commitment to sustainability aligns with its broader goal of becoming a global sustainability leader and becoming Net Positive in carbon and water by 2040.

According to Khalifa Bin Braik, the CEO of MAF – Asset Management, the achievement of Mall of the Emirates in receiving the LEED Platinum Certification for Operation and Maintenance and becoming the largest mall globally to receive this recognition has strengthened their resolve to achieve their Sustainable Business Commitments, which include becoming Net Positive in carbon and water by 2040.
