Meta Platforms is preparing to invest hundreds of billions of dollars into computing infrastructure as it accelerates its pursuit of artificial superintelligence, CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced.

In a post shared on Threads, Meta’s own social media platform, Zuckerberg said the company aims to build one of the “most elite and talent-dense teams in the industry” to drive progress in AI.

He emphasized that Meta has the financial strength to fund such a long-term, capital-intensive initiative. “We’re also going to invest hundreds of billions of dollars into compute to build superintelligence,” he said.

Superintelligence” refers to a theoretical form of AI that surpasses the cognitive capabilities of the human brain — a goal that has become a focal point in the global AI race.

To support this vision, Meta is planning to develop a network of large-scale data centers. One such facility, dubbed Prometheus, is expected to come online in 2026. Another, named Hyperion, could eventually require up to 5 gigawatts of power — enough energy to supply over 4 million average U.S. homes, according to experts.

Leading the next era of AI

Zuckerberg’s announcement underscores Meta’s growing commitment to leading the next era of AI development, joining a wave of tech giants intensifying their investments in supercomputing and advanced research capabilities.

The scale of Meta’s planned infrastructure build-out would place it among the largest AI investments to date, with implications across energy, data processing, and global AI innovation.

Meta ramps up AI push

Meta, which reported nearly $165 billion in revenue last year, has reorganized its AI initiatives under a newly formed division called Superintelligence Labs.

The restructuring follows recent challenges with its open-source Llama 4 model and the departure of key personnel.

The company is relying on Superintelligence Labs to drive new revenue streams through its Meta AI assistant, image-to-video advertising tools, and next-generation smart glasses. These innovations are part of Meta’s broader strategy to commercialize AI across its consumer and business platforms.

Meta in expert hiring spree

In a bold move to accelerate development, CEO Mark Zuckerberg has personally spearheaded a high-profile talent recruitment campaign in recent weeks.

The new division will be led by Alexandr Wang, former CEO of Scale AI, and Nat Friedman, former CEO of GitHub. Their appointments follow Meta’s $14.3 billion investment in Scale, underscoring the company’s commitment to building world-class AI leadership.

In April, Meta raised its 2025 capital expenditure guidance to between $64 billion and $72 billion, aiming to solidify its position in the intensifying AI race against competitors like OpenAI and Google.

The Superintelligence Labs initiative marks a pivotal phase in Meta’s AI roadmap, as the company doubles down on infrastructure, talent, and product monetization to lead the next wave of technological transformation.
