Saudi Arabia’s Prime Minister and Crown Prince H.H. Mohammed bin Salman has approved the inauguration of the International Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Ethics in Riyadh. The decision was taken on Tuesday, July 25th during a Cabinet meeting. The decree was made with the hopes of accelerating the growth, development, and adoption of artificial intelligence and other new technologies. This reflects the country’s commitment to becoming a leading global player in the AI sector. 

In brief, AI is set to play an important role in the Kingdom’s economy. A PwC report forecasts AI to contribute $135 billion to the Saudi economy by 2030, the biggest stake technology holds in the Middle East. AI is set to contribute 12.4 percent to the Kingdom’s GDP by 2030, in line with Vision 2030.

Ethical AI

In a bid to ensure policy-action, the Kingdom is hoping to put in place measures that facilitate a cyber safety and create a controlled online environment. In fact, the center will have its own legal, financial, and administrative independence. The institute’s work will recognize the ethical responsibility of the conscientious use of these technologies. The center intends to develop and implement ethical guidelines that will govern the responsible use of AI technologies. 

In line with Vision 2030, Saudi has already committed itself to harnessing a safe cyberspace with the establishment of the Global Cybersecurity Forum. Furthermore, the forum will host annual talks aiming to maximize the potential benefits derived from AI. By facilitating cross-border cooperation, Saudi aspires to leverage collective knowledge and expertise to accelerate AI advancements. 

The formation of the International Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Ethics underscores KSA’s recognition of the importance of AI in shaping various sectors. Consequently, this extends into healthcare, transportation, finance, and education.

In conclusion, by investing in AI, the country seeks to enhance public services, improve efficiency, and deliver innovative solutions to real-world problems. The faster introduction of AI into the economy will aid diversification efforts
