Saudi Arabia and Japan to collaborate on digital economy growth, technology innovation

Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology Eng. Abdullah bin Amer Al-Swaha recently held a meeting in Jeddah with Taro Kono, Japanese minister for Digital Transformation, along with his accompanying delegation. During the meeting, Al-Swaha and Minister Kono discussed the potential for expanding investment opportunities in the digital field between their respective countries. The aim of this collaboration is to support the growth of the digital economy and foster innovation.

One of the key topics of discussion was the progress made in various digital projects and joint initiatives under the Saudi and Japanese Vision 2030 frameworks. These initiatives are geared towards accelerating the adoption of modern technologies in digital government services. Additionally, the ministers explored the possibility of localizing research and development centers and promoting partnerships between Saudi Arabia and Japan. The ultimate goal is to develop capabilities and establish an economy that is based on technology and innovation.

Since the launch of Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia has been actively diversifying its economy beyond oil and striving to become a hub for tourism, entertainment, technology, and renewable energy. To achieve this transformation, the Kingdom is forming strategic alliances with its global allies and working towards mutually beneficial arrangements. In December 2023, Saudi Arabia and Japan further solidified their bilateral relations by finalizing 14 agreements across various sectors. These agreements, signed during the Saudi-Japanese Investment Forum in Riyadh, covered areas such as finance, healthcare, water, energy, and more.
