Saudi Arabia expands rail network with 50 new mtu train engines from Rolls-Royce

Rolls-Royce has announced a significant new order for 50 mtu Series 4000 engines from Stadler Bussnang AG, a global leader in rail vehicle manufacturing.

The engines will power ten new high-speed trains operating on the Dammam–Riyadh route, marking another milestone in the ongoing development of Saudi Arabia’s modern rail network.

The newly ordered trains will be capable of reaching speeds of up to 200 km/h, providing a faster and more efficient connection between the key Saudi cities of Dammam and Riyadh.

Before entering passenger service, four trains will undergo extensive testing and approval runs in Europe and Saudi Arabia, ensuring their performance and safety under diverse operating conditions.

Proven performance in harsh conditions

The mtu Series 4000 engines have already proven themselves in Saudi Arabia’s demanding climate. Since 2012, more than 70 mtu 12V 4000 engines have been successfully powering similar trains operated by Saudi Arabia Railways, demonstrating high reliability and efficiency in one of the world’s most challenging environments.

“They ensure smooth operation despite extreme ambient conditions with temperatures above 50°c and the influence of desert dust,” said Christopher Weckbecker, director, global Rail at Rolls-Royce.

“Under these conditions, reliable air conditioning alone is essential for the survival of train passengers and personnel. We are delighted that all diesel-powered passenger trains on the Arabian peninsula are powered by mtu Series 4000 engines – this is a strong vote of confidence in our outstanding products.

“At the same time, this order supports our strategy by expanding further into regional growth markets, enlarging Rolls-Royce’s global footprint in rail application.”

Engine specifications and delivery scope

Each of the 50 mtu 12V 4000 R64 engines ordered delivers 1,500 kW of power. Every train will be equipped with four engines, distributed across two power cars, while an additional ten engines will serve as spares and reserve units to ensure uninterrupted passenger service during maintenance or operational downtime.

The contract also includes an option for 40 additional engines, supporting the potential expansion of the fleet to include ten more trains in the future.

“For us, mtu propulsion technology from Rolls-Royce is a central component in this project. It not only enables high speeds, but also meets the highest standards of environmental compatibility, energy efficiency and operational safety,” said Tobias Arnold, commercial project lead at Stadler.

Boosting Saudi Arabia’s economic connectivity

The new high-speed trains are expected to play a crucial role in strengthening economic ties between Dammam and Riyadh, two of the kingdom’s major metropolitan hubs.

By significantly reducing travel time and enhancing service reliability, the mtu-powered trains will contribute to Saudi Arabia’s broader goals of infrastructure modernization and economic diversification.
