Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD) has launched the Insurance on Domestic Worker Contracts service. Domestic workers coming for the first time through the Musaned platform will have insurance coverage starting from February 1, 2024.

The ministry indicated that the insurance service for domestic workers will be part of the employer’s contract with the recruitment office or company. Moreover, insurance after two years is optional for the employer.

Notably, the service is currently available to Musaned customers, as the ministry had previously launched it as an option for its customers at the beginning of 2023. The number of customers who chose this service reached over 175 thousand. Additionally, the service has received positive interaction and feedback from customers.

What does the insurance service provide?

The insurance service allows the employer and the domestic workers to take advantage of compensation in a range of circumstances commencing from the date the domestic worker starts working. The insurance service for domestic worker contracts also benefits the employer. It compensates the employer for recruitment expenses in the event of the failure of the worker to attend duty. The employer may also be compensated due to the death or disability of the worker, or if the domestic worker suffers from chronic diseases that hinder them from performing duties.

In addition, it compensates for the expenses of returning the body, belongings, and personal property in the event of the death of the domestic worker. The insurance service also guarantees the preservation of the domestic worker’s rights, such as worker compensation in the event of permanent total disability or permanent partial disability resulting from an accident. Moreover, it compensates the worker if the employer does not commit to paying salaries and financial dues as a result of the employer’s death, permanent total disability, or permanent partial disability.

Protection programs

The insurance service for domestic worker contracts falls in line with the ministry’s efforts to develop the recruitment sector and protect the rights of domestic workers and employers. The ministry had previously launched the Wage Protection Program for Domestic Workers to preserve the rights of domestic workers’ wages in the kingdom. Moreover, MHRSD launched the Unified Contract Program for the Recruitment of Domestic Workers. This program stipulates the necessity of having a unified contract binding both parties to the contract and preserves the contractual rights as well as determines the obligations of both signatories. In addition, it sets a maximum ceiling for the recruitment of domestic workers from several countries, and many joint agreements.

Notably, MHRSD created the Musaned platform to enhance the recruitment sector in the kingdom. The platform provides multiple services to improve and facilitate the recruitment journey. It resolves complaints and disputes that may occur between domestic workers and employers, in addition to guaranteeing their rights.
