Saudi Arabia has made significant strides in its sustainability efforts with the recent launch of clean diesel and Euro-5-compliant gasoline in its markets. This initiative, announced by the Ministry of Energy, underscores the Kingdom’s commitment to reducing emissions and achieving environmental sustainability in line with Vision 2030 objectives.
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy revealed that the newly introduced clean diesel and Euro-5 gasoline offer lower emissions compared to traditional fuels. These fuels are suitable for all modes of transportation and aim to provide high efficiency and low emissions.
International standards
Euro-5 is a standard the European Union set to regulate vehicle emissions. Saudi Arabia’s adoption of Euro-5-compliant gasoline reflects its dedication to adopting global best practices in environmental regulation.
Additionally, the launch of these fuels aligns with the objectives of the Saudi Green Initiative and the Saudi Energy Efficiency Program, further solidifying the Kingdom’s position as a leader in sustainable efforts within the Middle East and North Africa region.
In addition to reducing emissions, the launch of clean diesel and gasoline in Saudi Arabia will stimulate the adoption of energy-efficient vehicle technologies. Hence, Saudi Arabia’s initiatives have established the Saudi ‘CAFE’ standard which aims to improve vehicles’ fuel economy and encourage automotive manufacturers to incorporate the latest energy-efficient technologies in vehicles imported into the Kingdom.
Towards net-zero emission
Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Energy emphasized that the introduction of clean diesel and Euro-5 gasoline is part of the Kingdom’s broader strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060. Through the application of the Circular Carbon Economy approach, Saudi Arabia aims to reduce emissions while maintaining its role as a reliable supplier of global energy.

Private sector contributions
Private sector entities in Saudi Arabia are also contributing to the adoption of clean fuels including diesel and gasoline. Multi-project developer Red Sea Global recently announced its transition to low-carbon biofuel in all its delivery trucks. It became the first company in the Kingdom to adopt the low-carbon alternative. This initiative, powered by electricity or biofuel produced from used cooking oil, demonstrates the private sector’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable practices.
