Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) achieved remarkable milestones in 2024, transporting over 13 million passengers across its networks—an increase of 22 percent compared to the previous year. The freight operations also experienced substantial growth, with more than 28 million tons of goods and minerals transported, reflecting a 15 percent rise. These accomplishments highlight SAR’s crucial role in advancing the Kingdom’s railway sector, supporting the national economy, and enhancing logistics services.
The Al Mashaaer Al Mugaddassah Metro Line played a vital role during the 1445 AH Hajj season, facilitating the transportation of over two million pilgrims. This effort alleviated road congestion and significantly improved the pilgrimage experience. Additionally, passenger train operations expanded, registering a 19 percent increase with more than 35,000 trips, as an increasing number of travelers chose safe and efficient rail travel.
SAR’s freight operations and sustainability efforts
SAR’s freight operations contributed importantly to sustainability initiatives, diverting over two million truck trips from Saudi roads. This strategic shift conserved more than 113 million liters of fuel, reduced carbon emissions, and enhanced road conditions, aligning with the National Transport and Logistics Strategy’s environmental objectives.

Landmark achievements in 2024
A significant milestone in 2024 was the launch of the Dream of the Desert train, marking the first luxury rail experience of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). This venture reinforces Saudi Arabia’s position in high-end tourism. Furthermore, SAR inaugurated a new freight rail route outside urban areas in Al-Ahsa, improving traffic safety and streamlining railway operations. The company also fortified its strategic partnerships through 63 contracts, agreements, and memoranda of understanding with various entities.

In terms of quality and safety, SAR secured six international certifications, reaffirming its commitment to the highest operational standards. Additionally, it initiated a nationwide railway safety awareness campaign aimed at educating the public on railway hazards and the importance of protecting both public and private property.
