Saudi minister of energy Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman announced that the kingdom is aiming to produce 130 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy by 2030. It will do this by producing an additional 20 gigawatts of renewable energy annually.
The minister added, during the eleventh session of the Saudi Arabia Smart Grid Conference in Riyadh, that the kingdom is ready “to export up to 150 gigawatts of electricity, whether green electricity or hydrogen.”
Sustainable initiatives
The kingdom is implementing more than 80 initiatives – worth more than SAR705 billion ($188 billion) – in the public and private sectors in the field of renewable energy. These initiatives include energy production from solar and wind SOURCES, the most notable of which are:
- Sudair PV Solar Power Plant: One of the largest solar photovoltaic power plants in the world. Its production capacity is 1,500 megawatts. Moreover, it is the first project the Public Investment Fund’s renewable energy program is implementing. The project will be completed in 2025.
- Dumat Al-Jandal Wind Plant: The first wind plant of this size in the Kingdom and the largest in the Middle East. Its production capacity is 400 megawatts. It is located in the Al Jouf region and is operating since July 2021.
In addition, Saudi is also establishing multiple sustainable projects that rely on renewable energy to reach its environmental goals. One of the most prominent projects is NEOM. It is an ambitious project that aims to achieve a prosperous and sustainable business environment. Thus, it is benefiting from advanced technologies and renewable energy.
