A new report highlighted Saudi Arabia's progress in using modern tech and innovating to build a sustainable future.

Saudi Arabia has taken significant strides in promoting sustainable digital practices, as evidenced by its efforts to recycle over 100,000 electronic devices in order to mitigate environmental damage. This forms part of the Kingdom’s broader strategy to build a sustainable digital future that optimizes resource utilization.

A recent report by the Communications, Space and Technology Commission has highlighted Saudi Arabia’s achievements in harnessing modern technologies and devising innovative business models that contribute to the development of a sustainable future.

Aligning with Saudi Arabia’s digital sustainability strategy

These initiatives align with Saudi Arabia’s digital sustainability strategy, which aims to foster circular digital economy projects and establish regulations to curb electronic waste in three countries. Moreover, the International Telecommunication Union and over 40 partners, including governments, companies, and United Nations agencies, have launched the Green Digital Action Initiative at the 28th Conference of the Parties to promote digital sustainability efforts.

Additionally, the Saudi Communications Authority has taken the lead in the digital economy, one of the initiative’s six tracks, underscoring the importance of collaboration between the government and industry to address the gaps in electronic waste management for the sake of a renewable economy.

Achieving best practices

Also, the Authority has developed a set of tools in cooperation with the Digital Cooperation Organization to assist in the formulation of digital sustainability strategies. These tools encompass five detailed steps, starting with raising awareness, achieving best practices, developing the strategy, promoting coordination with relevant stakeholders, and ultimately initiating the implementation phase.

Contributing to the green economy

These initiatives further demonstrate the Kingdom’s commitment to contributing to the green economy and exchanging experiences with the international community to ensure the adoption of best practices, ultimately leading to the establishment of sustainable societies.

Saudi Arabia’s continuous investments in its digital infrastructure over the past years have positioned the Kingdom as a global leader in digital sustainability commitments. The Communications, Space and Technology Commission is poised to become one of the most advanced fifth-generation digital regulatory bodies at the international level.
