The 69th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) for the year 2025 will be chaired by Saudi Arabia, as unanimously decided by the commission.
This appointment marks a significant milestone, with Ambassador Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Wasel becoming the first permanent representative of Saudi Arabia to lead the committee since its establishment in 1946.
Ambassador Al-Wasel assumed his role as ambassador and permanent representative of Saudi Arabia to the United Nations (U.N.) headquarters in New York in July 2022, following his service as ambassador and permanent representative to the U.N. Office at Geneva from November 2016.
A platform for exchange, amplifying women’s voices
The CSW, a technical committee under the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), is recognized as a key U.N. organ devoted to promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment worldwide. It further serves as a platform for the exchange of national experiences, best practices, and amplifying the voices of the women’s movement within the U.N.. Additionally, the commission’s primary focus is on advancing the status of women, convening annually to assess progress in this area, establish standards, and develop policies that uplift women’s status globally.
