Saudi Arabia has officially submitted a request to host the eleventh session of the World Water Forum in Riyadh in 2027. This submission confirms Saudi Arabia’s interest in sustaining water resources, improving the quality of life, achieving sustainable development goals, and continuing to play a pioneering role in dealing with water issues in regional and international arenas.
The World Water Forum, organized by the World Water Council, stands as the largest event in the field of water management. It serves as a gathering point for governments, organizations, officials, and experts from diverse fields to exchange experiences and foster cooperation in developing the sector while ensuring its long-term sustainability.
Showcasing international best practices
The forum provides a global platform for the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and collaboration among stakeholders. It also offers valuable opportunities to showcase international best practices and explore avenues for cooperation to ensure sustainable management of water resources worldwide.
Modern infrastructure and well-established regulations
Despite being one of the countries with the most limited water resources globally, the Kingdom has applied to host the forum. This is due in part to its possession of modern and advanced infrastructure, as well as well-established regulations and legislation governing the sector. The National Water Strategy serves as a roadmap that guides future endeavors and aids in overcoming challenges by establishing comprehensive institutional and structural frameworks.
Furthermore, the competition for hosting the forum in 2027 includes Rome, renowned for its fountains and aqueducts. The final decision is expected to be announced in May, during the 2024 Forum in Bali, Indonesia.

KACST, ACWA Power to establish clean tech research facility
On Sunday, the Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported that the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) and ACWA Power have entered into an agreement to establish a research center dedicated to clean energy and desalination technologies.
The establishment of the Center for the Development of Clean Energy Technologies and Water Desalination represents a significant milestone in the advancement of environmentally friendly energy and water desalination technologies in the region.
The primary focus of this research facility will be to conduct scientific studies in key areas related to clean energy and water. It will prioritize the development of solar energy technologies, including support for photovoltaic power stations in harsh climatic conditions. Additionally, the center will explore energy storage applications for future energy networks and innovative materials for desalination membranes.
