Saudi Aramco has made a significant gas discovery in the Jafurah Field, adding 15 trillion standard cubic feet of gas and 2 billion barrels of condensate to its reserves. The Ministry of Energy confirmed this in a press statement, quoting Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman. The ministry emphasized that the company’s adherence to the highest international standards in estimating and developing hydrocarbon resources has ensured the proper exploitation of these resources.

Significant gas discoveries by Saudi Aramco
In November 2023, the Ministry of Energy announced two additional gas discoveries by Saudi Aramco. The first discovery took place in the Al-Hiran-1 well in the Hanifa reservoir in the Eastern Province. Gas flowed from the reservoir at a rate of 30 million standard cubic feet per day, along with 1,600 barrels of condensate. The second discovery occurred in the Al-Mahakek-2 well, with a natural gas flow rate of 0.85 million standard cubic feet per day. The ministry also reported gas discoveries in five other reservoirs in previously known fields, including the Jalla reservoir in the Assekra field, where gas flowed at a rate of 46 million standard cubic feet per day.
Accelerated unconventional tight gas production
In addition to these discoveries, Saudi Aramco has commenced the production of unconventional tight gas, or shale gas, from its South Ghawar operational area. This production began two months ahead of schedule. Unconventional tight gas is typically trapped within rock layers and requires specialized techniques such as horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing for extraction. The facilities at South Ghawar currently have a processing capacity of 300 million standard cubic feet per day for raw gas and 38,000 barrels per day for condensate.
During the International Petroleum Technology Conference in Dhahran in February, Amin H. Nasser, the CEO of Saudi Aramco, expressed the company’s commitment to maintaining production across all types of energy, including oil, gas, and renewables. He also highlighted Aramco’s capability to expand profitably in any sector and create successful companies.
