Threads surpasses 100 million users

Instagram’s recently released Threads app has exceeded 100 million users in a remarkably short period of time, outpacing even the rapid adoption rate of ChatGPT. Despite taking two months to reach the 100 million user landmark, OpenAI’s chatbot was surpassed by Threads, which only became available on July 5. In fact, Threads’ explosive growth has been so rapid that it has even surpassed Twitter’s user count, taking Threads only five days to reach 100 million users compared to Twitter’s two months. There are now over 104 million Threads users.

The user count for Threads can be easily accessed within the Instagram app, as it keeps track of the size of the app’s user base.

Threads experienced an impressive surge in popularity right from the outset. Within the first two hours of its launch, the app garnered two million users, and its user base quickly grew to five million, then 10 million, and eventually reached 30 million and 70 million. The app’s success has far exceeded the expectations of CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who acknowledged that the launch had been a major triumph for the company.

The app isn’t just attracting users, it’s also encouraging them to actively engage with it. According to a report from Alex Heath, users have already shared over 95 million posts and received over 190 million likes on Threads.

Despite Threads’ impressive debut, it remains a relatively new app, and only time will tell whether it will achieve the same level of cultural significance as Twitter. Instagram head Adam Mosseri has emphasized that Meta is not specifically targeting the replacement of Twitter and has no plans to promote political news or hard news on the platform. However, it could potentially become a preferred destination for social media users seeking a conversation-based platform. While Meta is thrilled with the app’s successful launch week, Mosseri acknowledges that it is too early to determine whether Threads will retain its popularity over time.

Declining traffic on Twitter

While it’s important to note that the figures are not entirely comparable, Elon Musk tweeted last November that Twitter had approximately 260 million monetizable daily active users. However, according to recent reports, Twitter has been informing advertising partners that it has around 535 million monetizable monthly active users. Despite these numbers, external data indicates that Twitter’s traffic has been declining in recent months, and CloudFlare CEO Matthew Prince even posted on the platform to confirm that traffic is “tanking.”
